Hi gang. I know it’s been awhile, but I’m back and I bring with me good news: THE WINTER SPRINGS HAVE ARRIVED!
Last week we finally started to see a collection of Springs starting to show in Pedder Bay, Whirl Bay, and in the Fraser Island area of Beecher Bay. This week we are actually getting people returning with their limits and also telling stories of big fish that got away.
All the usual hot spots are working. If in Pedder Bay you want to be gear on the bottom and trolling in and around the Navy Can Buoy. Don’t be afraid to get your gear down almost skidding off the bottom; the bay is forgiving as it is a mud / gravel bottom.
Over at Whirl Bay, most production is coming off the pinnacle just off of Christopher and on either side of Church Rock. While Christopher is a bit more rugged in rock formation, watch your sounder and try and keep your gear about 5 to 7 feet off the bottom. Over at Church you need to watch out for the bullhead kelp, so don’t go to deep. Try around 75 feet but make sure you’re at least a good 500 feet off shore.
If you’re going to try over at Beecher you want to fish the area between Fraser Island and Creyke Point. Again, watch your depth sounder but 90 feet should probably work well.
For your salmon catching tools, your choices are much the same as last year: Purple Haze Anchovy Heads, Purple Haze Hootchies, and of course Purple Haze flashers. Other proven combos are Jellyfish Hootchies, green and white fluorescent #4 Coyote spoons, Glow Irish Mist, Glo Below, Jay 79, and Cloverleaf Hootchies should all turn heads. For flashers try Boogieman, Betsys (dry off after every use), Green Glow, and White Hot Spots or White Okis.
Remember, Lingcod is closed now until May of 2006.
Let’s halibut...
November 17th from dawn till 4pm, November 18th from dawn till 4:30pm. The same applies to Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The next best sets will start mid morning on Friday the 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th, and 30th. All these tides should work for you starting around 8:30am right through till noon or just after.
Remember to watch your weather when you’re on the hook... don’t let the black sea sneak up on you.
Tight lines, tips up, and dress warmly.
