September Overview

	Rental boats

All the rental boats are still in the water and are ready for an adventure. Seals, Sea lions, and all sorts of other wild life are out there to be seen. Whether you are an angler or a sightseer our boats will provide a nice reliable and comfortable platform for your adventure. Come on down and try them out they are the best deal on the coast for a rental boat.

Now that the kids are back at school and everyone is back to work its quiet time up at the RV Resort it’s well known that some folks wait until the fall to do their traveling at this time. If this is you please feel free to give us a call and find out how things are going and book a site. We know you won’t find a better more peaceful spot than this

	Salmon

Summer Chinook are going to be thinning out now as the season goes on. This just opens the window for fishing for Coho and perhaps even some more Sockeye. Give the immense size f the run of sockeye this year there is a chance that we will see the run passing for a few more weeks. Keep an eye on the site and of course come down and test fish for the Coho that are bound to start soon. Fishing in similar waters to the sockeye fishery we are certain to see them arrive by the numbers that are hooked while looking for sockeye. The calm mild days of the fall are coming where the water will be mirror calm and there won’t be any fog. Take advantage of these days as they do provide some of the most memorable fishing experiences around.

	Halibut Tides

	<there 2010="" 66="" all="" and="" appears="" be="" canadian="" coming="" current="" currents="" de="" fuca="" great="" halibut="" in="" juan="" long="" looking="" month="" of="" on="" p="" page="" researched="" right="" september="" some="" starting="" strait="" tables="" the="" these="" tide="" tides="" to="" up="" were="">
There appears to be some great looking Halibut tides coming up in the month of September starting right on the long weekend. These currents were all researched on page 66 of the 2010 Canadian Tide and Current Tables Juan de Fuca Strait and Strait of Georgia.

Below is listed the times when the currents look good to try for halibut around William Head to Constance bank.

 Good luck out there.
Please be safe and watch the weather closely this is the time of year that weather changes quickly.

Let the rain bring more in

Sockeye are still showing up in good numbers for those targeting them. Use pink hoochies and red flashers. Remember to keep the leaders short. 18 -24” is all you need to entice one of these fine eating fish. Try fishing off of Beechy Head or Church Rock not too far from the rocks. If you are fishing in 200 - 300’ of water with you gear down 35 to 60 feet you are in the “zone”. Once you hook a fish, circle back to try and stay on top of the school.

Halibut tides were good over the weekend but not a lot of folks were trying for them. Floyd Hickman and his fishing partner did get two nice fish in the 35 to 45 pound range. Keep an eye on the Word on the Dock for an update as to what the next set of halibut tides will be.

Overall, our summer Chinook fishing has been good this year, and we are still seeing some nice fish hit the docks. Our run of “Lower Fraser Whites” has just begun, and should offer some great opportunities for these hard fighting fish over the next few weeks. Local experts know that the biggest fish of the year are often taken in late August and early September. Andy here from the marina landed a 27lb Chinook fishing in the deep hole in Pedder Bay. The rain that is falling today should kick this run in to gear, and also start the Coho season.

Don’t forget that September-October are great months for camping and fishing. Milder weather, less crowds, and quality fish can definitely be a recipe for a good time. Get away from the house for the weekend, stay in your RV and launch or rent a boat, and get out there for some late summer angling adventures.

Looking forward to seeing you soon,

Tight lines,
44lb Chinook and Sockeye everywhere

A 44 lb. Chinook was weighted in yesterday evening along with many Sockeye. Sockeye are now predicted to be running for the next two weeks.

Don’t wait too long before going out you don’t want to miss the rare opportunity to get a Sockeye in the Juan de Fuca area.

Don’t forget that we rent a boats here to get you out to the great wildlife viewing and of course fishing.

Fishing is currently excellent with most anglers getting salmon. One of our new crew members did very well the other day by landing 3 Sockeye and losing two at the boat this being his second time fishing and all this on a solo trip!

Tight lines everyone,

See you soon,
August Word on the Dock - updated - August 10

	Fishing Update

This weekend has certainly been a good one. Fishing has been great off of Beachy Head and the Trap Shack.

Chinook have certainly shown up and the bites have been at first light and then again about mid morning. Anchovies and spoons have been the trick for the Springs.

Sockeye have been found right in the same areas as the Chinook have been found. If you want to zero in on the Sockeye exclusively troll out from shore until you are surrounded by jumping sockeye. Fish your pink gear slow straight and simple. If you don’t have any luck in one direction change your bearing and try again. Depths from 35 to 70 feet have produced the tasty “Reds”. A tip for when you get the fish is being ready with a fish tub and put the fish not on the deck but straight into a tub. These guys are SLIMMY you could end up on your but in the boat or worse if you are not careful. Also rinse out your net immediately after landing any fish especially a sockeye. This will stop the net from degrading and stinking to high heaven as it dries out.

Good luck out there, remember to come in and let us know how you have done out there.

Coffee House, RV & Marina Update

The Coffee house is now a Proudly Serving Starbucks and opened its doors on July 30th. The new and improved front desk and coffee service is a beautiful new addition to the Pedder Bay Facility. Come on down and have a coffee or even a cappuccino. We have the full range of coffee house drinks available for your morning wake-up. We also stock soups, sandwiches, sausage rolls and a variety of other pastries and cookies for your outing.

For all of you die hard fishermen, Pedder Bay Marina has a good stock of top quality 5 1\2 inch Rhys Davis anchovies available. Due to the huge demand for these great fish catchers, we are currently limiting purchases to 3 packs per customer.

Our tackle shop and marine chandlery are now fully back in business. The shelves are stocked with all the gear you really need at competitive prices.

The RV Resort has been offering convenient, first class camping opportunities for many of our fishing guests this season. The convenience of a full service RV resort overlooking a full service marina complete with store and coffee house is certainly attracting some attention, and the consensus from our guests is that it’s a real hit!

For those of you that don’t have boats, but still want to have a great day on the water, don’t forget our fleet of 16 ft rental boats. These fishing machines are powered by brand new 40 hp and 50 hp 4 stroke Yamaha motors, and we have tackle, rods and downriggers for rent as well if you need to be fully equipped.

We have some great combo packages out there for those seeking a complete weekend adventure. For a great weekend getaway we can offer a night in our RV resort or campground, plus a four hour boat rental for a total price starting at $69.00 plus tax! Now that’s a great deal for summer weekend fun…

We hope to see you down at the RV resort and Marina this August, fishing reports are looking good for the next month (see below) so come on down and joining us for a few hours or a weekend.

Fishing Reports:

	Salmon

Sockeye are opening as of Thursday the 5th of August. This is great news for local anglers, as the forecast is looking excellent for these tasty fish. Please remember the general rules for sockeye fishing. Using red or pink flashers and small mini-plankton hoochies (available in our tackle shop), find the right speed and direction and stick with the school of fish. Leader length can vary from 18 to 36 inches. Once you catch a fish, note your water speed and your direction and depth and repeat it. Go slow, and avoid sharp turns. Try to have as much gear in the water as possible by stacking rods and using dummy flashers off your downriggers. Sockeye are schooling fish, and creating lots of flash definitely draws more fish to your hooks. You should do well by these tricks.

Chinook fishing has been slower than last year, but for those that are hunting springs, it’s interesting to note that the folks that are jigging have been doing much better than the trollers, especially right in Pedder Bay. A fair number of fish up to 25 lbs have been taken in Pedder Bay over the last few days jigging. If jigging is not your thing you might want to try cut plugging near the kelp and rocks or trolling spoons and plugs with weights. A shallow run down rigger with some of the usual might do the trick as well.

The usual spots like Church Rock, Beechey Head and the Trap Shack are starting to produce a few more fish now, and we anticipate the action will heat up nicely over the next week or so as our summer and late run Fraser Chinook start to appear.

Halibut

Halibut fishing has been consistently good but as usual, success for halibut is pretty closely connected with fishing the right tide. Baits like octopus, sardine and large herring have been the lure of choice unless dogfish become a problem at which time successful anglers have been switching to Mud Rakers, Jig-a-loos, and other large jigs.

Here’s the good halibut tides for August:

 5th good all day

 6th good in the afternoon

13th first thing in the morning

14th First thing in the morning

 15th 5:30 until late morning

16th all morning and half the afternoon

 17th all day

 18th afternoon fishery

 19th mid afternoon

20th a short opportunity in the afternoon

21st short opportunity in the afternoon

28th all morning until mid afternoon

 29th all day

 30th all day

 31st all day

Hope to see you out here soon.
Tight lines and safe boating everyone.

	Coffee House

The Coffee House at Pedder Bay is officially open for business, “Proudly Serving Starbucks” at Pedder Bay. Come and see the huge change and enjoy a cappuccino and a pastry while you’re at it.

	Salmon

Chinook are starting to show in some more numbers. Successful anglers have been using hoochies. Gilles Gagnon the Assistant Manager has been very successful in his unorthodox use of a Purple Haze hoochie on a 6’ leader at first light. Just this morning a report has come in that there are some huge herring in the bay. It might be worth trying a super teaser and herring for the springs. It seems the track record shows to get out at first light to get your fish.

	Halibut

Halibut tides for August from pg 66 of the area 5 Canadian Tide and Current Tables. All these currents are taken from the JDF East chart. Please be careful as you get closer to Race Rocks as the currents are faster and the windows of opportunity are much smaller.

July Word on the Dock

	Coffee House

The Crew at Pedder Bay is very excited about the upcoming opening of the Coffee House. The expected opening day will be on the August long weekend. As we're getting to the opening day, please excuse the expected bustle of the construction crew getting the new addition shipshape.

	RV Resort

The brand new RV resort is getting fantastic reviews from everyone For the anglers in the crowd, the convenience of having the Marina and RV Resort so close has been fantastic. We have also been very proud of the comments of how nice and clean people are finding the facilities here. You don’t have to be an angler to enjoy our fantastic surroundings. Going for walks, renting a boat to go watch the wild life and see unobstructed views of the Olympics, walking or biking the Galloping Goose trail are just some of the activities that RV’ers are enjoying while staying at Pedder Bay.

	Rental Boats

Our rental fleet is up and running. Fish are coming and whales, seals and sea lions have all been spotted nearby. Come on down to experience the best of what Southern Vancouver Island has to show.

	Salmon

Currently a slot size is still in effect for Chinook. The new slot size is now 2 Chinook and only one can be over 67cm’s (26”) hatchery or wild. This will go on until July 15th. Feeders are still being hooked in deep water and some nice sized fish are being taken fishing in the 70 to 90 ft range. Try fishing for the big ones using anchovies on long leaders (6 to 8ft). Lately purple has been the colour of choice.

Some Coho have been brought in over the past few weeks most have been caught off of Beachy Head but have also been found in the Whirl Bay area. To get one these feisty salmon just go fishing for Chinook these voracious fish will certainly take what you have to offer. By doing this you increase your odds of getting a salmon in the box.

	Halibut

These predictions are taken off pg.66 of the Tide and Current tables for July

 2nd 7:06

 3rd all day

 4th all day

 5th all day

 6th all day

 7th mid morning on

Halibut has been doing quite well most fish are in the 30 to 40 lb range but we have seen some very nice fish in the 60’s and 70’s. The largest we have seen come through was 93 lbs.

Tight lines and safe driving everyone,

	Salmon Fishing

Salmon fishing has been great all this winter season. Now that we are into spring time we are still seeing great results. Chinook salmon are still being brought in up to the mid teens. There currently is a regulation in effect that protects wild fish over 67 cms long. Have no fear of this there are lots of hatchery fish of some really nice size.

Fishing using spoons, anchovies and green hootchies has been doing very well. Keep the speed up to near coho fishing speed and keep the leaders from you flasher to your terminal gear short. You are fishing for the “teenagers” here they like things fast and exciting.

	Halibut Fishing

When the weather has allowed people out on the water when the currents have been favorable the fishing for hali’s has been very productive. No secrets here on what to use. Bait and jigs seem to work equally well out there its all about location. Halibut fishing is more about hunting than salmon fishing is. Look where the other folks are fishing take note of why they would fish there and look ath the charts and see where there is similar structure for you to fish.

The halis are everywhere, there is no magic spot just the type of structure they like to hold and feed at. Study your charts use a GPS and a fish finder to your advantage and you will succeed.
