Word on the Dock

November and December Update

- November 5, 2008

Big changes in the fishery are here and more to come I’m sure. Halibut have been closed two months early. I see shrimping and prawning are closed in Saanich Inlet. Assuredly we will see some changes in the coming New Year as well.

At 7pm on November 17th at Esquimalt Anglers (1101 Munro Street, Victoria), there will be a Sport Fishing Advisory Committee (SFAC) meeting. This meeting will give you an opportunity to voice and/ or support concerns voiced by other anglers and related sport fishing business. DFO representatives will be there as well as your area representative Chris Boss. Chris will be chairing the meeting and will formulate the concerns voiced into a motion that will be brought forward to the new Fisheries Minister (who indecently is from PEI). As an avid sport fisherman who is will to spend some time reading about the opportunities it might be worth an evening of your time to familiarize yourself with the process and the players who are controlling the future of your pastime.

Now, on to fishing…

There were a lot of shakers this fall so there is hope for the future of our favoured sport.

Winter spring fishing should be picking up over the next couple of months. We have already seen some action in the bay. An angler should be able to find fish in Whirl Bay, Pedder Bay and Perry Bay by trolling deep (just off the bottom) using the tried and true Purple Haze Flasher, Purple Haze Squirt, Cop Car Coyote, or small anchovies.
