July Fishing Outlook

- June 30, 2008

What a spring! Enough said on that.

The fish have been showing up during the last week. Chinook coming out of the bay have been loaded full of squid. White or transparent hoochies have been producing in the bay. Interestingly enough some Chum have been showing up already. If you hook into a fish that behaves like a Chinook and a Coho you just might have a Chum on the line. These guys are great on the BBQ or in the smoker.

At the time of writing there will be no Sockeye fishing in the Victoria area, Coho will remain 2 per day (hatchery o)nly and Chinook regs will be 2 per day, over 45 cm. Being an even year there are no Pink salmon to speak of.

Lingcod regs have changed: you now can keep Lings from 60 cm and up. Remember, you are allowed only one Ling and one rock cod per day.

Halibut fishing has been doing very well this spring—let’s hope it stays that way through the summer.

There are not a lot of perfect hali tides this July. July 9 and 10 look to be good days, and July 24 and 25 as well. If you do some looking at the current tables there is a chance that you will find windows of opportunity to get out on other days of the month. Look for days with less tidal difference from the high and low.

July is going to have some big tides. The good side of that is that the fish will be pushed in; the bad is it will be harder to get the halis.

Tight lines all,
