Greetings from Pedder Bay RV Resort and Marina:
Spring has finally arrived, and with it, we are experiencing some pretty good fishing here at Pedder Bay.
Halibut opened up on March 1st with a daily bag limit of 1, and a possession limit of 2. Some great fish have been weighed in over the past few weeks, including a 150lb barn door brought in by guests of "No Bananas Charters". The fact that they rounded out their limit with a 65lber and a couple more in the 30's makes for a pretty awesome day of halibut fishing by anyone's standards!
Whenever the tides and wind cooperate, halibut are being taken in most of the popular spots including Constance Bank, Albert Head, East Race and points towards Sooke. Dogfish haven't been reported as overly abundant, so bait and spreader bar is the presentation of choice for successful anglers.
Good halibut tides for the remainder of March can be found on: AM March 29th, AM March 30th, and AM March 31st. Best halibut tides for April are April 26 - 29. Of course, good windows of opportunity can be found surrounding tide changes on most days, but please be careful out there anchoring on those larger tides.
Winter Chinook fishng has been consistent both in Pedder Bay itself, and also in Whirl Bay\Church Rock and the Bedfords. Fish have been taken at depths ranging from 60 to 180 feet. In Pedder Bay itself, deeper seems better than shallower - try to keep your gear within 20 feet of the bottom. Look for bait and stick around if you find it.
All the usual presentations seem to working on any given day but anchovies in glow or purple haze\green haze teaser heads have produced some nice fish, as have purple haze squitrs, and green\glow or prism image coyote spooes all trolled 4 to 6 ft behind a flasher. Glow flashers work well at this time of year.
Please note that we currently have a slot limit and marked fish regulations in place for areas 19 (east of Cadboro Pt) and 20 (up to Jordan River). Until June 17th, anglers are permitted 2 Chinook per day 45 to 67 cm in length, but only hatchery marked fish over 67 cm. After June 17th, anglers wil be permitted 2 Chinook per day, but only one wild fish over 67 cm.
Crabbing has been hit and miss but on the good days limits for everyone seems to be the norm and ther are some nice ones out there right now.
No boat? No problem! We have a large fleet of fully equipped 16 and 17 foot rental boats available here at Pedder Bay. Our friendly staff will outfit you with the proper equipment, show you where the hotspots are and get you out on the water to enjoy a great day of fishing.
The warmer weather and longer days have brought the campers out to Pedder Bay RV Resort. Come on down, set up the trailer or camper and enjoy good times around the campfire with friends and family.
Winter is long enough, and its finally officially over! Get outside, get the wind in your hair and a fish on the rod - there is no better cure for cabin fever!
Tight lines - Pedder Bay RV Resort Crew.
