Halibut fishing was outstanding this month!! Unfortunately the winds kept coming up especially on the Juan De Fuca derby weekend. WOW.
Gord Gavin of Sea Ghost charters and his guests have been giving a bit of a clinic on “how to catch halibut” with over a dozen beautiful halis in about 3 days.
On the salmon side of things fish are being found all over the place now. Lots of talk on the dock about the Trap Shack and Beachy Head. Folks are using anchovies primarily with a variety of heads. None of the colours that I have seen working have been all that bright. Mostly green, purple, glow in the dark, etc…
I have been out fishing a bit myself and can’t seem to catch a fish unless I’m fishing at my doorstep in Pedder Bay itself. I’m not complaining it’s just that I go so far away only to come home to catch fish. None of the fish have been huge YET but that will come.
Going against the flow I have been using a short leadered (20″) Green Ghost hootchies around 50 pulls and having some success. I have also been using a 4&Prime Blue-silver Coyote spoon and had success with that as well.
As our summer moves on here we can expect to see more fish, especially Pinks. These fish are great for getting people introduced to sport fishing or just getting some salmon for the BBQ. Of course there will be Springs and hatchery Coho to target as well. As for the halibut, some great tides are coming up to target them this coming month.
I don’t know who arranges these tides but they do a good job of having good halibut tides on the weekends.
These look to be the prime times. I’m sure there are small windows of opportunity for those willing to get out early and late in the days.
Prime halibut tides for July
- Saturday the 7th all day
- Sunday the 8th all day
- Monday the 9th in the afternoon
- Friday the 20th all day
- Saturday the 21st morning till mid afternoon
- Sunday 22nd morning through mid afternoon
Good luck everyone, Remember these reports are only as good as the info we get from you the fisher folk. Drop by and let us know how you did on your days fishing.
