Word on the Dock

April Update

- April 12, 2006

Hi gang and sorry I’m a bit late this month, lots of stuff happening. Well let’s get to it!!!!

Weather and fishing go hand in hand and finally I’m pleased to say both are now happening at full strength.

Chinook fishing in all your favourite spots is going well and unlike the waterfront our seal problem is still fairly contained. We have a lot of Herring in the area right now and I think that is one contributing factor to both the Seals and the good numbers of Chinook being caught.

Pedder Bay across the mouth of the Harbour on the 90′ – 120′ mark has continued to produce good size Chinook in the high teens and low 20’s. Around the corner in Whirl Bay by Christopher Point is another good area especially on a slack or ebb tide. Whirl Bay does have the biggest concentration of Seals so try to remember to turn off the clicker when playing a fish. Church Rock has produced the biggest Chinook weighed in this year it was 23 ½ lbs. and Ted Litster broke in his new boat the Artic Loon while landing this fish, a job well done when you consider he was by himself.

Other big hitters for the month were Gord Gavin the “Captain of Sea Ghost Charters” and his 109 ½ lb. Halibut — that’s good advertising!!!! Gord Schellcaby and his 19lb Chinook, Jack Smith 18lbs. caught in Whirl Bay, and The Pedder Crew of Brandon Moore and Gilles Gagnon 18 ½ lbs. taken off Christopher Point.

More big halis: Zoloft with a 61lber. off the Race, Beannie with 2 in the 70lb range, and Adrian O’Connor with a 77lber. Good job everybody even if you didn’t make this week’s “Word on the Dock”.

Well now let’s look at the tides coming up this week…

Thursday the 13th you have a chance between 10 and 12 noon or later in the day between 3pm and dinner time.

Friday the 14th will be very similar to the 13th; the only change will be that Friday will be about a half hour later for timing.

Don’t forget to pickup your tickets for the 10TH Annual Just For The Halibut Derby, tickets are $50.00 per rod and are available at Pedder Bay Marina till they sell out or Island Outfitters steals them back.

Friday the 21st right at 6:00am until 8:30am, and then try the low slack around 4:00pm if you want an afternoon fish.

Saturday the 22nd DAY 1 of the derby, high slack between 5:00am and 8:00am, then fish your life away until the scales close cause you have a big low slack from 4:30 until it’s over for day one.

Sunday the 23rd DAY 2 of the derby, High slack from daybreak right up until 1:00pm then you better get going cause the derby ends promptly at 2:00pm.

Monday the 24th there’s a nice slow flooding tide working across the graph from daybreak until 2:00pm.

Tuesday the 25th the flood picks up a bit of momentum with high slack around 2:30pm but then it turns to slow ebb for the rest of the day.

Wednesday and Thursday will have to be an afternoon fish as the early tide is now too strong.

Let’s talk gear…

For salmon I’d go with Coyote Spoons, green on glow or cop car, Hootchies such Army Truck, Purple haze, or Mint tulip, and for bait its got to be 6” Anchovy in a glow head.

For Halibut I’d try Mackerel, Big Purple Herring, Sardines, or Octopus.

Till next time Boat Safe & Catch Safe,
